Touching Spirit Bear was not a book I would initially have picked up and read as it is a fairly easy read and isn't part of my preferred genre. However, I will say that this book was a pleasant surprise because I ended up loving the message contained within. The book follows Cole Matthews, a bully who almost ends up killing a kid named Peter. Instead of going to jail, Cole gets admitted into Circle Justice - a disciplinary group that attempts to heal and bring about self-reflection and forgiveness instead of punishment. Circle Justice decides to banish Cole to an island to survive on his own where he ends up getting mauled by a spirit bear. Will this kill Cole, or strengthen his spirit?

As previously stated, this was not a book I would have chosen to read. But as I started reading and got into the book, I got interested and captivated by the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed its plot and story line. It was easy to understand and follow, but had different twists that forced you to pay attention. This book is a must read for everyone. The lesson is very important for everyone, no matter the age, race, sex, etc. It has taught me how to value everything, from a meal to being alive.

I recommend this to anyone middle school or older. The book is a very easy read, but kids might not understand the lesson in the book or everything that happens. One should definitely read this at some point in their life.
